179. 세상 누구도 그의 승리에 미치지 못하고

그의 승리를 되될릴 수 없다.

깨달은 이의 무한한 영역은 자취가 없는데 

어떤 길로 끌고 갈 수 있을까?

Yassa jitaṃ nāvajīyati jitaṃ assa no yāti koci loke 

Taṃ buddhamanantagocaraṃ apadaṃ kena padena nessatha.

By what track can you trace 

that trackless Buddha of limitless range, 

whose victory nothing can undo, 

whom none of the vanquished defilements can ever pursue?

180. 어디로 잡아 끌고 갈 집착과 

갈애가 그에게 없다.

깨달은 이의 무한한 영역은 자취가 없는데 

어떤 길로 끌고 갈 수 있을까?

Yassa jālinī visattikā taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave 

Taṃ buddhamanantagocaraṃ apadaṃ kena padena nessatha.

By what track can you trace 

that trackless Buddha of limitless range, 

in whom exists no longer, 

the entangling and embroiling craving that perpetuates becoming?

181. 선정에 전념하는 지혜로운 이들은 

욕망이 사라진 정적 속에서 즐겁다.

하늘의 신들  또한 그들의 완전한 깨달음과 

깨어있음을 열망한다.

Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā nekkhammūpasame ratā 

Devāpi tesaṃ pihayanti sambuddhānaṃ satīmataṃ.

Those wise ones who are devoted to meditation 

and who delight in the calm of renunciation—such mindful ones, 

Supreme Buddhas, even the gods hold dear.

* 선정이란 명상을 통한 마음이 집중된 상태를 말한다. 집중을 바탕으로 한 지혜의 개발과 완성으로 통해 깨달음을 성취한다고 설명한다.

182. 사람으로 태어나기 어렵고 

죽는 존재들의 삶도 어렵다. 

진실한 법은 듣기 어렵고 

깨달은 이의 나타남도 어렵다. 

Kiccho manussapaṭilābho kicchaṃ maccāna jīvitaṃ 

Kicchaṃ saddhammassavanaṃ kiccho buddhānamuppādo.

Hard is it to be born a man; 

hard is the life of mortals. 

Hard is it to gain the opportunity of hearing the Sublime Truth, 

and hard to encounter is the arising of the Buddhas.

183. 모든 악을 짓지 않고 

선을 받들어 실천하며

자신의 마음을 깨끗히 하는 것, 

이것이 깨달은 이들의 가르침이다. 

Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṃ kusalassa upasampadā 

Sacittapariyodapanaṃ etaṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ.

To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, 

and to cleanse one’s mind—

this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

184. 참고 인내함이 최상의 고행이고 

열반이 최상이라 깨달은 이들이 말한다. 

출가자는 남을 해치지 않고 

수행자는 남을 괴롭히지 않는다. 

Khantī paramaṃ tapo titikkhā nibbānaṃ paramaṃ vadanti buddhā 

Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī na samaṇo hoti paraṃ viheṭhayanto.

Enduring patience is the highest austerity. 

“Nibbana is supreme,” say the Buddhas. 

He is not a true monk who harms another, 

nor a true renunciate who oppresses others.

185. 비난하지 않고 해치지 않으며 

계율 가운데 절제하고

음식의 적당한 양을 알아 

홀로 멀리서 앉고 누우며

명상에 전념하는 것,

이것이 깨달은 이들의 가르침이다.

  

Anupavādo anupaghāto pātimokkhe ca saṃvaro 

Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṃ pantañca sayanāsanaṃ 

Adhicitte ca āyogo etaṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ.

Not despising, not harming, 

restraint according to the code of monastic discipline, 

moderation in food, dwelling in solitude, 

devotion to meditation—

this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

186. 돈벼락을 맞아도 

욕망에는 만족이 없기에

만족이 적은 욕망은 고통임을 

지혜로운 사람은 잘 이해한다. 

Na kahāpaṇavassena titti kāmesu vijjati 

Appassādā dukhā kāmā iti viññāya paṇḍito.

There is no satisfying sensual desires, 

even with the rain of gold coins. 

For sensual pleasures give little satisfaction and much pain. 

Having understood this,

187. 갈애의 소멸에 전념하는 

바르게 완전히 깨달은 이의 제자는

천상의 욕망에서 조차 

즐거움을 찾지 못한다.

Api dibbesu kāmesu ratiṃ so nādhigacchati 

Taṇhakkhayarato hoti sammāsambuddhasāvako.

the wise man finds no delight even in heavenly pleasures. 

The disciple of the Supreme Buddha 

delights in the destruction of craving.

188. 두려움에 떠는 인간들은 

여러 산과 숲

공원, 나무, 신전 등을 

보호처로 찾아가지만

Bahuṃ ve saraṇaṃ yanti pabbatāni vanāni ca 

Ārāmarukkhacetyāni manussā bhayatajjitā.

Driven only by fear, 

do men go for refuge to many places—

to hills, woods, groves, trees and shrines.

189. 이는 진정 안전한 보호처가 아니고 

이는 최상의 보호처가 아니다.

이러한 보호처를 찾아가도 

모든 고통에서 벗어나지 못한다. 

N’ etaṃ kho saraṇaṃ khemaṃ n’ etaṃ saraṇamuttamaṃ 

N’ etaṃ saraṇamāgamma sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

Such, indeed, is no safe refuge; 

such is not the refuge supreme. 

Not by resorting to such a refuge 

is one released from all suffering.

190. 깨달은 이와 그의 가르침, 

승가라는 보호처에 귀의한 사람은 

바른 지혜를 얻어 

네 가지 성스러운 진리를 본다.

 

Yo ca buddhañ ca dhammañ ca saṅghañ ca saraṇaṃ gato 

Cattāri ariyasaccāni sammappaññāya passati.

He who has gone for refuge to the Buddha, 

the Teaching and his Order, 

penetrates with transcendental wisdom the Four Noble Truths—

* 깨달은 이(부처), 그의 가르침(법), 승가를 이르러 불교에서는 세가지 보석, 삼보라 한다. 승가는 좁은 의미로 깨달음을 이룬 부처님의 제자들을 뜻하고, 넓게는 부처님을 따르는 모든 존재들을 뜻한다.

191. 그 네가지는 고통, 

고통의 일어남, 고통의 사라짐,

고통을 제거하는 

성스러운 여덟가지 길이다.

 

Dukkhaṃ dukkhasamuppādaṃ dukkhassa ca atikkamaṃ 

Ariyaṃ caṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ dukkhūpasamagāminaṃ.

suffering, the cause of suffering, 

the cessation of suffering, 

and the Noble Eightfold Path 

leading to the cessation of suffering.

192. 이것이 진정 안전한 보호처이고 

이것이 최상의 보호처이다. 

이러한 보호처에 가는 것으로 

모든 고통에서 벗어난다.

 

Etaṃ kho saraṇaṃ khemaṃ etaṃ saraṇamuttamaṃ 

Etaṃ saraṇamāgamma sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

This indeed is the safe refuge, 

this the refuge supreme. 

Having gone to such a refuge, 

one is released from all suffering.

193. 보기 힘든 태생의 훌륭한 사람은 

어디서나 태어나지 않는다.

그런 지혜로운 사람이 태어나는 곳

그 가문은 행복으로 번영한다. 

Dullabho purisājañño na so sabbattha jāyati 

Yattha so jāyati dhīro taṃ kulaṃ sukhamedhati.

Hard to find is the thoroughbred man (the Buddha); 

he is not born everywhere. 

Where such a wise man is born, 

that clan thrives happily.

194. 깨달은 이의 출현이 행복이고 

참된 법을 가르침도 행복이다. 

승가의 화합이 행복이고 

함께 길을 가는 이들의 고된 수행도 행복이다. 

Sukho buddhānamuppādo sukhā saddhammadesanā 

Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī samaggānaṃ tapo sukho.

Blessed is the birth of the Buddhas; 

blessed is the enunciation of the sacred Teaching; 

blessed is the harmony in the Order, 

and blessed is the spiritual pursuit of the united truth-seeker.

195. 존경받아 마땅한 이들

깨달은 이들과 그들의 제자들,

망상을 잘 극복하여 슬픔과 

절망을 건넌 이들을 공경함.

Pūjārahe pūjayato buddhe yadi va sāvake 

Papañcasamatikkante tiṇṇasokapariddave.

He who reveres those worthy of reverence, 

the Buddhas and their disciples, 

who have transcended all obstacles 

and passed beyond the reach of sorrow and lamentation—

196. 열반을 얻어 어디에도 

두려움이 없는 이들을 공경함.

누구도 이 같은 공덕을 

바로 이만큼이다 셈할 수 없다. 

Te tādise pūjayato nibbute akutobhaye 

Na sakkā puññaṃ saṅkhātuṃ imettamapi kenaci.

he who reveres such peaceful and fearless ones, 

his merit none can compute by any measure.
