167. 저속한 법을 가까이 말고 

나태하게 살지 말라.

잘못된 견해를 받아들이지 말고 

세속에 탐닉하지 말라.

Hīnaṃ dhammaṃ na seveyya pamādena na saṃvase 

Micchādiṭṭhiṃ na seveyya na siyā lokavaḍḍhano.

Follow not the vulgar way;

 live not in heedlessness; 

hold not false views; 

linger not long in worldly existence.

167. 저속한 법을 가까이 말고 

나태하게 살지 말라.

잘못된 견해를 받아들이지 말고 

세속에 탐닉하지 말라.

Hīnaṃ dhammaṃ na seveyya pamādena na saṃvase 

Micchādiṭṭhiṃ na seveyya na siyā lokavaḍḍhano.

Follow not the vulgar way;

 live not in heedlessness; 

hold not false views; 

linger not long in worldly existence.

168. 일어나라, 게으르지 말라! 

법을 잘 실천하며 살아가라!

법을 실천하는 이는 행복하게 산다,

이 세상과 저 세상에서. 

Uttiṭṭhe nappamajjeyya dhammaṃ sucaritaṃ care 

Dhammacārī sukhaṃ seti asmiṃ loke paramhi ca.

Arise! Do not be heedless! 

Lead a righteous life. 

The righteous live happily 

both in this world and the next.

169. 법을 잘 실천하여 살고 

나쁜 짓을 하지 말라. 

법을 실천하는 이는 행복하게 산다, 

이 세상과 저 세상에서. 

Dhammaṃ care sucaritaṃ na naṃ duccaritaṃ care 

Dhammacārī sukhaṃ seti asmiṃ loke paramhi ca.

Lead a righteous life; 

lead not a base life. 

The righteous live happily 

both in this world and the next.

170. 물거품처럼 보고

환영처럼 보아라!

이와 같이 세상을 바라보는 이를 

죽음의 왕은 찾지 못한다. 

Yathā bubbuḷakaṃ passe yathā passe marīcikaṃ 

Evaṃ lokaṃ avekkhantaṃ maccurājā na passati.

One who looks upon the world 

as a bubble and a mirage, 

him the King of Death sees not.

171. 왕의 마차와 같이 화려한 

이 세상을 와서 보아라!

바보들은 거기서 침몰하지만 

잘 이해한 이들은 집착하지 않는다. 

Etha passathimaṃ lokaṃ cittaṃ rājarathūpamaṃ 

Yattha bālā visīdanti natthi saṅgo vijānataṃ.

Come! Behold this world, 

which is like a decorated royal chariot. 

Here fools flounder, 

but the wise have no attachment to it.

172. 전에 나태했으나 

훗날 나태하지 않아

구름을 벗어난 달처럼 

그는 이 세상을 비춘다.  

Yo ca pubbe pamajjitvā pacchā so nappamajjati 

Somaṃ lokaṃ pabhāseti abbhā mutto va candimā.

He who having been heedless is heedless no more, 

illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.

173. 지은 악업을 

선업으로 덮어버리고

구름을 벗어난 달처럼 

그는 이 세상을 비춘다.  

Yassa pāpaṃ kataṃ kammaṃ kusalena pithīyati

So maṃ lokaṃ pabhāseti abbhā mutto va candimā.

He, who by good deeds covers the evil he has done, 

illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.

174.  이 세상은 눈이 멀어 

소수만이 여기서 분명히 보고 

그물을 벗어난 새처럼 

적은 수만이 하늘 세상에 간다. 

Andhabhūto ayaṃ loko tanukettha vipassati 

Sakuṇo jālamutto va appo saggāya gacchati.

Blind is the world; 

here only a few possess insight. 

Only a few, like birds escaping from the net, 

go to realms of bliss.

175. 백조들은 해의 길을 가고 

어떤 이들은 신통으로 허공을 가며 

지혜로운 이들은 마라와 그의 군대를 정복하고 

이 세상을 떠나간다. 

Haṃsādiccapathe yanti ākāse yanti iddhiyā 

Nīyanti dhīrā lokamhā jetvā māraṃ savāhanaṃ.

Swans fly on the path of the sun; 

men pass through the air by psychic powers; 

the wise are led away from the world 

after vanquishing Mara and his host.

176. 하나의 법을 어긴자에게

거짓말을 하는 사람에게 

다음 세상을 포기한 자에게 

하지 못할 악행이란 없다. 

Ekaṃ dhammaṃ atītassa musāvādissa jantuno 

Vitiṇṇaparalokassa natthi pāpaṃ akāriyaṃ.

For a liar who has violated the one law (of truthfulness) 

who holds in scorn the hereafter, 

there is no evil that he cannot do.

177. 인색한 자들은 천상에 가지 못하고 

어리석은 자들은 나눔을 칭찬하지 않지만 

지혜로운 이는 나눔을 함께 기뻐하고 

이로써 그는 다음 세상에서도 행복하다. 

Na ve kadariyā devalokaṃ vajanti bālā have nappasaṃsanti dānaṃ 

Dhīro ca dānaṃ anumodamāno ten’ eva so hoti sukhī parattha.

Truly, misers fare not to heavenly realms; 

nor, indeed, do fools praise generosity. 

But the wise man rejoices in giving, 

and by that alone does he become happy hereafter.

178. 대지의 하나뿐인 왕이 되는 것보다

하늘 세상에 태어나는 것보다

온 세상을 지배하는 것보다

도의 흐름에 든 결실이 최고이다. 

Pathavyā ekarajjena saggassa gamanena vā 

Sabbalokādhipaccena sotāpattiphalaṃ varaṃ.

Better than sole sovereignty over the earth, 

better than going to heaven, 

better even than lordship over all the worlds 

is the supramundane Fruition of Stream Entrance.
