157. 나를 소중히 여긴다면 

자신을 잘 지켜 보호해야 한다.

지혜로운 이는 밤의 세 때 가운데 

한 때는 깨어 있어야 한다.

Attānañce piyaṃ jaññā rakkheyya naṃ surakkhitaṃ 

Tiṇṇaṃ aññataraṃ yāmaṃ paṭijaggeyya paṇḍito.

If one holds oneself dear, 

one should diligently watch oneself. 

Let the wise man keep vigil 

during any of the three watches of the night.

158. 지혜로운 이가 먼저 

자신을 바르게 세우고 

남을 가르친다면 

더럽혀지지 않을 것이다.  

Attānameva paṭhamaṃ patirūpe nivesaye 

Ath’ aññam anusāseyya na kilisseyya paṇḍito.

One should first establish oneself in what is proper; 

then only should one instruct others. 

Thus the wise man will not be reproached.

159. 남을 가르치는 대로 

나도 그와 같이 행동해야 한다. 

자신을 다스림은 어렵지만 

나를 다스린이가 이가 남도 다스릴 수 있다. 

Attānaṃ ce tathā kayirā yath’ āññam anusāsati 

Sudanto vata dametha attā hi kira duddamo.

One should do what one teaches others to do; 

if one would train others, 

one should be well controlled oneself. 

Difficult, indeed, is self-control.

160. 내가 진정 나의 보호자인데 

어디 다른 보호자가 있을까? 

스스로를 잘 다스려 

얻기 힘든 보호자를 얻는다. 

Attā hi attano nātho ko hi nātho paro siyā 

Attanā hi sudantena nāthaṃ labhati dullabhaṃ.

One truly is the protector of oneself; 

who else could the protector be? 

With oneself fully controlled, 

one gains a mastery that is hard to gain.

161. 스스로 지은 악업은 

내가 낳은 것이고 내가 나타낸 것으로

금강석이 돌로 만든 구슬을 부수듯 

어리석은 자를 부순다. 

Attanā hi kataṃ pāpaṃ attajaṃ attasambhavaṃ 

Abhimatthati dummedhaṃ vajiraṃ v’ amhamayaṃ maṇiṃ.

The evil a witless man does by himself, 

born of himself and produced by himself, 

grinds him as a diamond grinds a hard gem.

162. 살나무에 퍼진 덩굴처럼 

행실이 매우 나쁜 자는 

원수가 적를 대하듯 

자신에게 그와 같이 행동한다. 

Yassa accantadussīlyaṃ māluvā sālamiv’ otthataṃ 

Karoti so tath’ attānaṃ yathā naṃ icchatī diso.

Just as a single creeper strangles the tree 

on which it grows, even so, 

a man who is exceedingly depraved harms himself 

as only an enemy might wish.

163. 자신에게 해가 되고 

좋지 않은 일들은 하기 쉽다.

하지만 이롭고 좋은 일은 

참으로 실천하기 어렵다.

Sukarāni asādhūni attano ahitāni ca 

Yaṃ ve hitañca sādhuñca taṃ ve paramadukkaraṃ.

Easy to do are things 

that are bad and harmful to oneself. 

But exceedingly difficult to do are things 

that are good and beneficial.

164. 바르게 살아가는 

성스러운 아라한들의 가르침을 

나쁜 견해에 기대어

비난하는 어리석은 자는

갈대의 열매와 같이 

자신을 파괴하는 결과를 낳는다.

Yo sāsanaṃ arahataṃ ariyānaṃ dhammajīvinaṃ 

Paṭikkosati dummedho diṭṭhiṃ nissāya pāpikaṃ 

Phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva attaghaññāya phallati.

Whoever, on account of perverted views, 

scorns the Teaching of the Perfected Ones,

the Noble and Righteous Ones—

that fool, like the bamboo, 

produces fruits only for self destruction.

165. 스스로 악업을 지어 

스스로를 더럽힌다. 

스스로 악업을 짓지 않아 

스스로를 깨끗히 한다.

깨끗함과 더러움은 각자의 것으로 

남이 남을 깨끗하게 하지 못한다. 

Attanā va kataṃ pāpaṃ attanā saṃkilissati 

Attanā akataṃ pāpaṃ attanā va visujjhati 

Suddhī asuddhi paccattaṃ nāñño aññaṃ visodhaye.

By oneself is evil done; by oneself is one defiled. 

By oneself is evil left undone; 

by oneself is one made pure. 

Purity and impurity depend on oneself; 

no one can purify another.

166. 아무리 그 수가 많아도 남의 행복을 위해 

나의 행복을 가벼이 여겨서는 안 된다. 

자신의 행복을 깊이 이해하고

참다운 행복을 추구함이 있다.

Attadatthaṃ paratthena bahunāpi na hāpaye 

Attadatthamabhiññāya sadatthapasuto siyā.

Let one not neglect one’s own welfare 

for the sake of another, however great. 

Clearly understanding one’s own welfare, 

let one be intent upon the good.
