16. 소중함의 장

209. 애쓰지 않을 일에 스스로 노력하고
애써야 할 일에 노력하지 않으면서
목표를 저버리고 사랑에 취한 자는
자신의 목표에 전념하는 이를 부러워하다.
Ayoge yuñjamattānaṃ yogasmiñca ayojayaṃ
Atthaṃ hitvā piyaggāhī pihet’ attānuyoginaṃ.
Giving himself to things to be shunned
and not exerting where exertion is needed,
a seeker after pleasures,
having given up his true welfare,
envies those intent upon theirs.
210. 소중한 것도 소중하지 않은 것도
어느 때고 만나지 말라.
소중한 것을 보지 못함도
소중하지 않은 것을 보는 일도 고통이다.
Mā piyehi samāgañchi appiyehi kudācanaṃ
Piyānaṃ adassanaṃ dukkhaṃ appiyānañ ca dassanaṃ.
Seek no intimacy with the beloved
and also not with the unloved,
for not to see the beloved
and to see the unloved, both are painful.
211. 그러므로 소중한 것을 만들지 말라,
소중한 것의 상실은 괴롭기에.
구속이 없는 이들에게는 소중한 것과
소중하지 않은 것이 없다.
Tasmā piyaṃ na kayirātha piyāpāyo hi pāpako
Ganthā tesaṃ na vijjanti yesaṃ natthi piyāppiyaṃ.
Therefore hold nothing dear,
for separation from the dear is painful.
There are no bonds for those
who have nothing beloved or unloved.
212. 소중한 것에서 슬픔이 일어나고
소중한 것에서 두려움이 일어난다.
소중한 것에서 자유로운 이에게
슬픔이 없는데 어디 두려움이 있을까?
Piyato jāyatī soko piyato jāyatī bhayaṃ
Piyato vippamuttassa natthi soko kuto bhayaṃ.
From endearment springs grief,
from endearment springs fear.
For one who is wholly free from endearment
there is no grief, whence then fear?
213. 사랑에서 슬픔이 일어나고
사랑에서 두려움이 일어난다.
사랑에서 자유로운 사람에게
슬픔이 없는데 어디 두려움이 있을까?
Pemato jāyatī soko pemato jāyatī bhayaṃ
Pemato vippamuttassa natthi soko kuto bhayaṃ.
From affection springs grief,
from affection springs fear.
For one who is wholly free from affection
there is no grief, whence then fear?
214. 애착에서 슬픔이 일어나고
애착에서 두려움이 일어난다.
애착에서 자유로운 사람에게
슬픔이 없는데 어디 두려움이 있을까?
Ratiyā jāyatī soko ratiyā jāyatī bhayaṃ
Ratiyā vippamuttassa natthi soko kuto bhayaṃ.
From attachment springs grief,
from attachment springs fear.
For one who is wholly free from attachment
there is no grief, whence then fear?
215. 욕망에서 슬픔이 일어나고
욕망에서 두려움이 일어난다.
욕망에서 자유로운 사람에게
슬픔이 없는데 어디 두려움이 있을까?
Kāmato jāyatī soko kāmato jāyatī bhayaṃ
Kāmato vippamuttassa natthi soko kuto bhayaṃ.
From lust springs grief,
from lust springs fear.
For one who is wholly free from craving
there is no grief; whence then fear?
216. 갈애에서 슬픔이 일어나고
갈애에서 두려움이 일어난다.
갈애에서 자유로운 사람에게
슬픔이 없는데 어디 두려움이 있을까?
Taṇhāya jāyatī soko taṇhāya jāyatī bhayaṃ
Taṇhāya vippamuttassa natthi soko kuto bhayaṃ.
From craving springs grief,
from craving springs fear.
For one who is wholly free from craving
there is no grief; whence then fear?
217. 계행과 통찰을 갖추고
법에 머물러 진실을 알면서
자신의 할 일을 하는 이를
사람들은 소중히 여긴다.
Sīladassanasampannaṃ dhammaṭṭhaṃ saccavedinaṃ
Attano kamma kubbānaṃ taṃ jano kurute piyaṃ.
People hold dear him
who embodies virtue and insight,
who is principled, has realized the truth,
and who himself does what he ought to be doing.
218. 말할 수 없는 열반에
의욕을 나타낸 이는 마음이 넓어야 한다.
욕망에 묶이지 않은 마음을
위로 향하는 흐름이라 부른다.
Chandajāto anakkhāte manasā ca phuṭo siyā
Kāmesu ca appaṭibaddhacitto uddhaṃsoto ti vuccati.
One who is intent upon the Ineffable (Nibbana),
dwells with mind inspired (by supramundane wisdom),
and is no more bound by sense pleasures—
such a man is called “One Bound Upstream.”
219. 오래 떨어져 살던 이가
멀리서 무사히 돌아오면
혈육과 친구와 벗들이
그의 귀환을 기뻐한다.
Cirappavāsiṃ purisaṃ dūrato sotthimāgataṃ
Ñātimittā suhajjā ca abhinandanti āgataṃ.
When, after a long absence,
a man safely returns from afar,
his relatives, friends and well-wishers
welcome him home on arrival.
220. 그처럼 공덕을 짓고
이 세상에서 저세상으로 건너간 이를
혈육이 돌아온 소중한 가족을 반기듯
지은 공덕들은 맞이한다.
Tatheva katapuññampi asmā lokā paraṃ gataṃ
Puññāni paṭigaṇhanti piyaṃ ñātīva āgataṃ.
As kinsmen welcome a dear one on arrival,
even so his own good deeds will welcome
the doer of good who has gone from this world to the next.
