17. 성냄의장

221. 화를 버리고 교만을 잘라 버려
모든 속박을 극복해야 한다.
몸과 마음에 매달리지 않아 집착이 없는 이를
고통은 따라가지 못한다.
Kodhaṃ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṃ saṃyojanaṃ sabbamatikkameyya
Taṃ nāmarūpasmimasajjamānaṃ akiñcanaṃ nānupatanti dukkhā.
One should give up anger, renounce pride,
and overcome all fetters.
Suffering never befalls him
who clings not to mind and body and is detached.
222. 굴러가는 마차와 같은
일어난 화를 진정 다스리는 이,
나는 그를 마부라 부른다.
다른 사람은 고삐만 잡고 있을 뿐이다.
Yo ve uppatitaṃ kodhaṃ rathaṃ bhantaṃva dhāraye
Tamahaṃ sārathiṃ brūmi rasmiggāho itaro jano.
He who checks rising anger
as a charioteer checks a rolling chariot,
him I call a true charioteer.
Others only hold the reins.
223. 성내지 않음으로 화를 정복하고
선으로 악을 정복해야 한다.
나눔으로 인색함을 정복하고
진실로 거짓말을 정복해야 한다.
Akkodhena jine kodhaṃ asādhuṃ sādhunā jine
Jine kadariyaṃ dānena saccenālikavādinaṃ.
Overcome the angry by non-anger;
overcome the wicked by goodness;
overcome the miser by generosity;
overcome the liar by truth.
224. 진실을 말하고 화내지 말며
누군가 청할때 가진 것이 적어도 주어라.
이 세 가지 조건으로써
천신들 가까이로 갈 것이다.
Saccaṃ bhaṇe na kujjheyya dajjā appasmi yācito
Etehi tīhi ṭhānehi gacche devāna santike.
Speak the truth; yield not to anger;
when asked, give even if you only have a little.
By these three means can one reach the presence of the gods.
225. 비폭력을 실천하여
몸으로 항상 절제하는 성인들은
죽음이 없는 땅에 이르러
거기서 더는 슬퍼하지 않는다.
Ahiṃsakā ye munayo niccaṃ kāyena saṃvutā
Te yanti accutaṃ ṭhānaṃ yattha gantvā na socare.
Those sages who are inoffensive
and ever restrained in body,
go to the Deathless State,
where, having gone, they grieve no more.
226. 항상 깨어 있고
낮과 밤으로 공부하는
열반을 향하는 이들에게
모든 번뇌가 사라진다.
Sadā jāgaramānānaṃ ahorattānusikkhinaṃ
Nibbānaṃ adhimuttānaṃ atthaṃ gacchanti āsavā.
Those who are ever vigilant,
who discipline themselves day and night,
and are ever intent upon Nibbana—
their defilements fade away.
227. 아뚤라여, 이것은 오래된 일로
단지 오늘의 일이 아니다.
사람들은 조용히 앉아 있다 비난하고
말이 많다고도 비난하며
말을 적당히 해도 비난한다.
세상에 비난받지 않는 이는 없다.
Porāṇametaṃ atula netaṃ ajjatanām iva
Nindanti tuṇhiṃ āsīnaṃ nindanti bahubhāṇinaṃ
Mitabhāṇim pi nindanti natthi loke anindito.
O Atula! Indeed, this is an ancient practice,
not one only of today:
they blame those who remain silent,
they blame those who speak much,
they blame those who speak in moderation.
* 아뚤라는 부처님 당시 가르침을 듣고 이렇다 저렇다며 항상 불평을 일삼은 인물이다.
228. 오로지 비난만 받는 사람
또는 오로지 칭찬만 받는 사람은
이전에도 없었고,
앞으로도 없을 것이며, 지금도 없다.
Na cāhu na ca bhavissati na c’ etarahi vijjati
Ekantaṃ nindito poso ekantaṃ vā pasaṃsito.
There is none in the world who is not blamed.
There never was, there never will be, nor is there now,
a person who is wholly blamed or wholly praised.
229. 그러나 지혜로운 이들이
매일 매일 살펴 칭찬하는 사람은
계행과 지혜를 갖춰 현명하여
행실에 과실이 없다.
Yaṃ ce viññū pasaṃsanti anuvicca suve suve
Acchiddavuttiṃ medhāviṃ paññāsīlasamāhitaṃ.
But the man whom the wise praise,
after observing him day after day,
is one of flawless character, wise,
and endowed with knowledge and virtue.
230. 잠부강의 금화 같은 그를
누가 비난할 수 있을까?
신들도 그를 칭찬하고
범천의 신 또한 그를 칭찬한다.
Nekkhaṃ jambonadasseva ko taṃ ninditum arahati
Devā pi naṃ pasaṃsanti brahmunā pi pasaṃsito.
Who can blame such a one,
as worthy as a coin of refined gold?
Even the gods praise him;
by Brahma, too, is he praised.
231. 몸의 성냄을 알아차려
몸으로 절제가 있어야 한다.
몸의 잘못된 행동을 버리고
몸으로 좋은 일을 해야 한다.
Kāyappakopaṃ rakkheyya kāyena saṃvuto siyā
Kāyaduccaritaṃ hitvā kāyena sucaritaṃ care.
Let a man guard himself against irritability in bodily action;
let him be controlled in deed.
Abandoning bodily misconduct,
let him practice good conduct in deed.
232. 말의 성냄을 알아차려
말로 절제가 있어야 한다.
말의 잘못된 행동을 버리고
말로 좋은 일을 해야 한다.
Vacīpakopaṃ rakkheyya vācāya saṃvuto siyā
Vacīduccaritaṃ hitvā vācāya sucaritaṃ care.
Let a man guard himself against irritability in speech;
let him be controlled in speech.
Abandoning verbal misconduct,
let him practice good conduct in speech.
233. 마음의 성냄을 알아차려
마음으로 절제가 있어야 한다.
마음의 잘못된 행동을 버리고
마음으로 좋은 일을 해야한다.
Manopakopaṃ rakkheyya manasā saṃvuto siyā
Manoduccaritaṃ hitvā manasā sucaritaṃ care.
Let a man guard himself against irritability in thought;
let him be controlled in mind.
Abandoning mental misconduct,
let him practice good conduct in thought.
234. 지혜로운 이들은 몸으로 절제하고
또한 말로 절제하고
마음으로 절제한다.
지혜로운 이들은 참으로 잘 절제한다.
Kāyena saṃvutā dhīrā atho vācāya saṃvutā
Manasā saṃvutā dhīrā te ve suparisaṃvutā.
The wise are controlled in bodily action,
controlled in speech and controlled in thought.
They are truly well-controlled.
