235. 지금 누런 나뭇잎과 같은 너를 

염라의 사자들이 기다리는데

너는 죽음의 문턱에 서서 

길 떠날 노자도 없다.

Paṇḍupalāsova dāni si yamapurisāpi ca taṃ upaṭṭhitā 

Uyyogamukhe ca tiṭṭhasi pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.

Like a withered leaf are you now; 

death’s messengers await you. 

You stand on the eve of your departure, 

yet you have made no provision for your journey!

236. 자신을 위한 섬을 만들고 

서둘러 노력하여 지혜로운 이가 되라. 

더러움을 털어 버린 티 없는 그대는 

천상의 고귀한 경지에 이를 것이다.

So karohi dīpamattano khippaṃ vāyama paṇḍito bhava 

Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo dibbaṃ ariyabhūmiṃ ehisi.

Make an island for yourself! 

Strive hard and become wise! 

Rid of impurities and cleansed of stain, 

you shall enter the celestial abode of the Noble Ones.

237. 이제 나이가 다하여 

염라의 세상 가까이 다가갔으나

너는 그 사이에 머물 집이 없고 

길 떠날 노자도 없다.

Upanītavayo ca dāni si sampayātosi yamassa santike 

Vāso pi ca te natthi antarā pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.

Your life has come to an end now; 

You are setting forth into 

the presence of Yama, the king of death. 

No resting place is there for you on the way, 

yet you have made no provision for the journey!

238. 자신을 위한 섬을 만들고 

서둘러 노력하여 지혜로운 이가 되라.

더러움을 털어 버린 티 없는 그대는 

태어남과 늙음을 다시 겪지 않으리.

So karohi dīpamattano khippaṃ vāyama paṇḍito bhava 

Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo na punaṃ jātijaraṃ upehisi.

Make an island unto yourself! 

Strive hard and become wise! 

Rid of impurities and cleansed of stain, 

you shall not come again to birth and decay.

239. 현명한 이는 서서히 

조금씩 조금씩, 매 순간 순간

세공사가 은을 다루듯

자신의 더러움을 없애야 한다. 

Anupubbena medhāvī thokaṃ thokaṃ khaṇe khaṇe 

Kammāro rajatasseva niddhame malamattano.

One by one, little by little, moment by moment, 

a wise man should remove his own impurities, 

as a smith removes his dross from silver.

240. 쇠에서 생긴 녹이 

쇠에서 나와 쇠를 갉아먹듯

이처럼 그가 지은 업들이 

시주물을 낭비한 그를 악처로 끌고 간다. 

Ayasā va malaṃ samuṭṭhitaṃ tatuṭṭhāya tam eva khādati 

Evaṃ atidhonacārinaṃ sakakammāni nayanti duggatiṃ.

Just as rust arising from iron eats away 

the base from which it arises, even so, 

their own deeds lead transgressors to states of woe.

241. 진언은 독송하지 않아 더러워지고 

집은 돌보지 않아 더러워진다.

용모는 게을러 더러워지고 

깨어있음은 나태하여 더러워진다.

Asajjhāyamalā mantā anuṭṭhānamalā gharā 

Malaṃ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṃ pamādo rakkhato malaṃ.

Non-repetition is the bane of scriptures; 

neglect is the bane of a home; 

slovenliness is the bane of personal appearance, 

and heedlessness is the bane of a guard.

242. 잘못된 행동은 사람에게 더러움이고 

인색함은 주는 이에게 더러움이다.

나쁜 법들은 진실로 

이 세상과 저 세상에서 더러움이다.

Malitthiyā duccaritaṃ maccheraṃ dadato malaṃ 

Malā ve pāpakā dhammā asmiṃ loke paramhi ca.

Unchastity is the taint in a woman; 

niggardliness is the taint in a giver. 

Taints, indeed, are all evil things, 

both in this world and the next.

243. 그러나 이보다 더한 더러움이 있으니 

어리석음이 최고의 더러움이다. 

이 더러움을 제거하여 

청정한 이들이 되어라, 비구들이여!  

Tato malā malataraṃ avijjā paramaṃ malaṃ 

Etaṃ malaṃ pahantvāna nimmalā hotha bhikkhavo

A worse taint than these is 

ignorance, the worst of all taints. 

Destroy this one taint 

and become taintless, O monks!

244. 부끄러움이 없는 자 

까마귀처럼 뻔뻔하고 주제넘은 자 

경솔하고 무모한 자

더러움으로 살아가는 자에게 삶은 쉽다. 

Sujīvaṃ ahirikena kākasūrena dhaṃsinā 

Pakkhandinā pagabbhena saṃkiliṭṭhena jīvitaṃ.

Easy is life for the shameless one 

who is impudent as a crow, 

is backbiting and forward, 

arrogant and corrupt.

245. 부끄러움을 아는 이

언제나 청정함을 얻고자 하는 이

정직하고 신중한 이

청정한 삶으로 성찰하는 이에게 삶은 어렵다. 

Hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṃ niccaṃ sucigavesinā 

Alīnenāppagabbhena suddhājīvena passatā.

Difficult is life for the modest one 

who always seeks purity, 

is detached and unassuming, 

clean in life, and discerning.

246. 생명을 죽이고 

거짓말을 하며 

세상에서 주지 않는 것을 갖고 

다른 이의 아내를 범하는 자

Yo pāṇamatipāteti musāvādañca bhāsati 

Loke adinnaṃ ādiyati paradārañ ca gacchati.

One who destroys life, utters lies, 

takes what is not given, 

goes to another man’s wife,

247. 곡물과 과일로 만든 

술을 마시고 중독된 자는

단지 여기 이 세상에서 

자신의 뿌리를 파버릴 뿐이다. 

Surāmerayapānañ ca yo naro anuyuñjati 

Idhevameso lokasmiṃ mūlaṃ khaṇati attano.

and is addicted to intoxicating drinks—

such a man digs up his own root even in this world.

248. 이와 같이 친구여!

제어되지 않은 악한 법들을 알라.  

선한 법이 아닌 탐욕이 

오랫동안 고통을 가져오게 하지 말라.

 

Evaṃ bho purisa jānāhi pāpadhammā asaññatā 

Mā taṃ lobho adhammo ca ciraṃ dukkhāya randhayuṃ.

Know this, O good man: 

evil things are difficult to control. 

Let not greed and wickedness drag you

to protracted misery.

249. 사람은 진정 믿음에 따라

만족에 따라 나누어 주므로

거기 다른 이들이 주는 마실 것과 

먹을 것에 만족을 못하는 자는

낮에도 또는 밤에도 

선정을 얻지 못한다.

Dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṃ yathāpasādanaṃ jano 

Tattha yo maṅku bhavati paresaṃ pānabhojane 

Na so divā vā rattiṃ vā samādhimadhigacchati.

People give according to their faith or regard. 

If one becomes discontented 

with the food and drink given by others, 

one does not attain meditative absorption, 

either by day or by night.

250. 그러나 이런 불만족을 잘 끊고 

뿌리를 뽑아 제거한 이는

낮에도 또한 밤에도 

선정을 얻는다.

Yassa c’ etaṃ samucchinnaṃ mūlaghaccaṃ samūhataṃ 

Sa ve divā vā rattiṃ vā samādhim adhigacchati.

But he in whom discontent is fully destroyed, 

uprooted and extinct, 

he attains absorption, 

both by day and by night.

251. 욕망 같은 불이 없고 

미움 같은 집념이 없다.

어리석음 같은 그물이 없고 

갈애와 같은 강이 없다. 

Natthi rāgasamo aggi natthi dosasamo gaho 

Natthi mohasamaṃ jālaṃ natthi taṇhāsamā nadī.

There is no fire like lust; 

there is no grip like hatred; 

there is no net like delusion; 

there is no river like craving.

252. 남들의 잘못은 보기 쉬우나 

자신의 잘못은 참으로 보기 어렵다.

겨를 까부르듯 

남들의 잘못을 드러내는 자는

교활한 도박꾼이 나쁜 패를 감추듯 

자신의 잘못을 숨긴다.

Sudassaṃ vajjamaññesaṃ attano pana duddasaṃ 

Paresaṃ hi so vajjāni opunāti yathā bhusaṃ 

Attano pana chādeti kaliṃ va kitavā saṭho.

Easily seen is the fault of others, 

but one’s own fault is difficult to see. 

Like chaff one winnows another’s faults, but hides one’s own, 

even as a crafty fowler hides behind sham branches.

253. 남들의 잘못을 바라보며 

항상 불만을 품는 자에게

번뇌가 늘어나

 번뇌의 소멸에서 멀어진다. 

Paravajjānupassissa niccaṃ ujjhānasaññino 

Āsavā tassa vaḍḍhanti ārā so āsavakkhayā.

He who seeks another’s faults, 

who is ever censorious—

his cankers grow. 

He is far from destruction of the cankers.

254. 허공에는 자취가 없고 

불법 밖에는 참된 수행자가 없다.

인간들은 헛된 망상을 기뻐하나 

깨달은 이들은 망상을 여의었다.  

Ākāseva padaṃ natthi samaṇo natthi bāhire 

Papañcābhiratā pajā nippapañcā tathāgatā.

There is no track in the sky, 

and no recluse outside (the Buddha’s dispensation). 

Mankind delights in worldliness, 

but the Buddhas are free from worldliness.

255. 허공에는 자취가 없고 

불법 밖에 참된 수행자가 없다.

조건으로 형성된 것은 영원하지 않고 

깨달은 이들에게 흔들림은 없다. 

Ākāseva padaṃ natthi samaṇo natthi bāhire 

Saṅkhārā sassatā natthi natthi buddhānam iñjitaṃ.

There is no track in the sky, 

and no recluse outside (the Buddha’s dispensation). 

There are no conditioned things that are eternal, 

and no instability in the Buddhas.
