256. 법에 서 있는 이는 ‘그렇다’ 며
성급히 결정하지 않는다.
현명한 이는 그렇고 그렇지 않은
양쪽을 다 고려한다.
Na tena hoti dhammaṭṭho yenatthaṃ sahasā naye
Yo ca atthaṃ anatthañ ca ubho niccheyya paṇḍito.
Not by passing arbitrary judgments
does a man become just;
a wise man is he who investigates
both right and wrong.
257. 신중함과 법 그리고
공정함으로 남을 이끄는 사람은
법의 수호자, 현인 그리고
법에 서 있는 이라 불린다.
Asāhasena dhammena samena nayatī pare
Dhammassa gutto medhāvī dhammaṭṭho ti pavuccati.
He who does not judge others arbitrarily,
but passes judgment impartially according to the truth,
that sagacious man is a guardian of law and is called just.
258. 말을 많이 한다 하여
지혜로운 이가 아니다.
미움과 두려움이 없어 고요한 사람이
지혜로운 이라 불린다.
Na tena paṇḍito hoti yāvatā bahu bhāsati
Khemī averī abhayo paṇḍito ti pavuccati.
One is not wise because one speaks much.
He who is peaceable,
friendly and fearless is called wise.
259. 말을 많이 한다 하여
법을 받드는 사람이 아니다.
비록 적게 듣고 배워도
몸으로 실천하여 법을 보고
법에 나태하지 않은 이
그가 진실로 법을 받드는 사람이다.
Na tāvatā dhammadharo yāvatā bahu bhāsati
Yo ca appampi sutvāna dhammaṃ kāyena passati
Sa ve dhammadharo hoti yo dhammaṃ nappamajjati.
A man is not versed in Dhamma
because he speaks much.
He who, after hearing a little Dhamma,
realizes its truth directly and is not heedless of it,
is truly versed in the Dhamma.
260. 머리가 희다는 이유로
장로가 되지 않는다.
나이만 먹은 자는
쓸모없는 노인이라 불린다.
Na tena thero hoti yen’ assa palitaṃ siro
Paripakko vayo tassa moghajiṇṇo ti vuccati.
A monk is not an elder
because his head is gray.
He is but ripe in age,
and he is called one grown old in vain.
– 장로는 오랜 출가 생활과 수행의 성취로 존경받는 수행자를 뜻하는 말이다.
261. 진실과 법,
비폭력과 절제와 다스림 속에서
참으로 더러움을 버린
지혜로운 그가 장로라 불린다.
Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca ahiṃsā saṃyamo damo
Sa ve vantamalo dhīro thero iti pavuccati.
One in whom there is truthfulness,
virtue, inoffensiveness, restraint and self-mastery,
who is free from defilements and is wise—
he is truly called an Elder.
262. 단지 언변이 좋다하여
또는 용모가 아름답다하여
질투하고 인색하며 교활한 자가
훌륭한 사람이 되지 않는다.
Na vākkaraṇamattena vaṇṇapokkharatāya vā
Sādhurūpo naro hoti issukī maccharī saṭho.
Not by mere eloquence nor by beauty of form
does a man become accomplished,
if he is jealous, selfish and deceitful.
263. 그러나 이것을 끊고
그 뿌리를 뽑아 제거하여
미움을 버린 현명한 이가
훌륭한 사람이라 불린다.
Yassa c’ etaṃ samucchinnaṃ mūlaghaccaṃ samūhataṃ
Sa vantadoso medhāvī sādhurūpo ti vuccati.
But he in whom these are wholly destroyed,
uprooted and extinct, and who has cast out hatred—
that wise man is truly accomplished.
264. 서원을 실천하지 않는 거짓말장이가
삭발을 했다 하여 수행자는 아니다.
욕망과 탐욕을 가진 자가
어찌 수행자가 될 것인가?
Na muṇḍakena samaṇo abbato alikaṃ bhaṇaṃ
Icchālobhasamāpanno samaṇo kiṃ bhavissati.
Not by shaven head
does a man who is indisciplined and untruthful become a monk.
How can he who is full of desire and greed be a monk?
265. 그러나 크고 작은
악행을 두루 평정하여
그런 악행의 평정으로
수행자라 불린다.
Yo ca sameti pāpāni aṇuṃ thūlāni sabbaso
Samitattā hi pāpānaṃ samaṇo ti pavuccati.
He who wholly subdues
evil both small and great is called a monk,
because he has overcome all evil.
266. 남들에게 걸식을 한다고
이 때문에 비구는 아니다.
비린내 나는 법을 취하므로
이 때문에 비구가 아니다.
Na tena bhikkhu so hoti yāvatā bhikkhate pare
Vissaṃ dhammaṃ samādāya bhikkhu hoti na tāvatā.
He is not a monk just
because he lives on others’ alms.
Not by adopting outward form does
one become a true monk.
267. 그러나 여기 선과 악을
모두 떠나 성스럽게 살아가며
세상 가운데 사려깊게 행동하는
그가 진실로 비구라 불린다.
Yodha puññañca pāpañca bāhetvā brahmacariyavā
Saṅkhāya loke carati sa ve bhikkhū ti vuccati.
Whoever here (in the Dispensation) lives a holy life,
transcending both merit and demerit,
and walks with understanding in this world—
he is truly called a monk.
268. 우매한 모습의 아둔한 자가
침묵으로 성자가 되지 않는다.
그러나 균형을 잘 잡듯
지혜로운 이는 최선을 택한다.
Na monena munī hoti mūḷharūpo aviddasu
Yo ca tulaṃva paggayha varam ādāya paṇḍito.
Not by observing silence does one become a sage,
if he be foolish and ignorant.
But that man is wise who,
as if holding a balance-scale accepts only the good.
269. 악행을 멀리하여
그는 성자가 된다.
세상 일 가운데 양쪽을 다 이해하여
이것으로 성자라 불린다.
Pāpāni parivajjeti sa munī tena so muni
Yo munāti ubho loke muni tena pavuccati.
The sage (thus) rejecting the evil, is truly a sage.
Since he comprehends both (present and future) worlds,
he is called a sage.
270. 살아있는 것들을 해치는 자는
고귀한 이가 아니다.
모든 살아있는 것들을 해치지 않아
고귀한 이라 불린다.
Na tena ariyo hoti yena pāṇāni hiṃsati
Ahiṃsā sabbapāṇānaṃ ariyo ti pavuccati.
He is not noble
who injures living beings.
He is called noble
because he is harmless towards all living beings.
271. 계행과 서원을 실천하는 것만으로
또는 단지 많은 배움으로
선정을 얻는 것만으로
홀로 살며 잠을 자는 것만으로
Na sīlabbatamattena bāhusaccena vā pana
Atha vā samādhilābhena vivittasayanena vā.
Not by rules and observances,
not even by much learning,
nor by gain of absorption,
nor by a life of seclusion, nor by thinking,
272. 번뇌의 소멸에 이르지 못한 비구는
“나는 보통 사람이 알지 못하는
세속을 떠난 행복을 누린다”
확신하지 말아야 한다.
Phusāmi nekkhammasukhaṃ aputhujjanasevitaṃ
Bhikkhu vissāsamāpādi appatto āsavakkhayaṃ.
“I enjoy the bliss of renunciation,
which is not experienced by the worldling”
should you, O monks, rest content,
until the utter destruction of cankers (Arahantship) is reached.
