21. 성실함은 죽지 않는 길이고 

나태함은 죽음의 길이다.

부지런한 이들은 죽지 않지만 

게으른 자들은 죽은 것과 같다. 

Appamādo amatapadaṃ pamādo maccuno padaṃ 

Appamattā na mīyanti ye pamattā yathā matā.

Heedfulness is the path to the Deathless. 

Heedlessness is the path to death. 

The heedful die not. 

The heedless are as if dead already.

22. 지혜로운 이들은 

성실함을 이같이 이해하고

성실함을 기뻐하며

성인들의 경계에서 즐거워한다.

Evaṃ visesato ñatvā appamādamhi paṇḍitā 

Appamāde pamodanti ariyānaṃ gocare ratā.

Clearly understanding 

this excellence of heedfulness, 

the wise exult therein 

and enjoy the resort of the Noble Ones.

23. 끊임없이 명상하고 

확고히 노력하는 지혜로운 이들은 

속박을 벗어나서 

위없는 평안의 열반을 얻는다.

Te jhāyino sātatikā niccaṃ daḷhaparakkamā 

Phusanti dhīrā nibbānaṃ yogakkhemaṃ anuttaraṃ.

 

The wise ones,

ever meditative and steadfastly persevering,

alone experience Nibbana,

the incomparable freedom from bondage.

* 열반은 불이 완전히 꺼진 상태, 즉 마음의 완전한 평화로움과 고요함을 뜻한다.

 

24. 노력으로 항상 깨어 바라보며 

맑은 행동, 사려깊은 실천과 절제로

올바르게 살아가는 부지런한 이에게 

명성이 늘어만 간다.

Uṭṭhānavato satīmato sucikammassa nisammakārino 

Saññatassa dhammajīvino appamattassa yaso bhivaḍḍhati. 

Ever grows the glory of him who is energetic, 

mindful and pure in conduct, 

discerning and self-controlled, 

righteous and heedful.

25. 노력과 성실, 

절제와 다스림으로

현명한 이는 홍수가 휩쓸지 못할 

섬을 만들어야 한다.

Uṭṭhānen’ appamādena saṃyamena damena ca 

Dīpaṃ kayirātha medhāvī yaṃ ogho nābhikīrati.

By effort and heedfulness, 

discipline and self-mastery, 

let the wise one make for himself 

an island which no flood can overwhelm.

26. 어리석고 바보 같은 사람들은 

나태함에 빠져 살지만

현명한 이는 최고의 재산같은 

부지런함을 보호한다.

Pamādam anuyuñjanti bālā dummedhino janā 

Appamādañ ca medhāvī dhanaṃ seṭṭhaṃva rakkhati.

The foolish and ignorant 

indulge in heedlessness, 

but the wise one keeps his heedfulness 

as his best treasure.

27. 나태함에 빠지지 말고 

감각적 욕망의 즐거움을 가까이 말라. 

부지런히 명상하는 이는 

실로 많은 행복을 얻는다. 

  

Mā pamādam anuyuñjetha mā kāmaratisanthavaṃ

Appamatto hi jhāyanto pappoti vipulaṃ sukhaṃ.

Do not give way to heedlessness. 

Do not indulge in sensual pleasures. 

Only the heedful and meditative

attain great happiness.

28. 지혜로운 이가 성실함으로 

나태함을 몰아낼 때

슬픔을 여의고 지혜의 성루에 올라서서 

산 위에서 땅을 내려보듯

슬퍼하는 인간들, 

저 어리석은 자들을 바라본다.

Pamādaṃ appamādena yadā nudati paṇḍito 

Paññāpāsādam āruyha asoko sokiniṃ pajaṃ 

Pabbataṭṭhova bhummaṭṭhe dhīro bāle avekkhati.

Just as one upon the summit of a mountain 

beholds the groundlings, 

even so when the wise man casts away 

heedlessness by heedfulness 

and ascends the high tower of wisdom, 

this sorrowless sage 

beholds the sorrowing and foolish multitude.

29. 게으른 자들 가운데 부지런하고 

잠든 자들 가운데 오래 깨어있어

빠른 말이 힘없는 말을 제치고 가듯 

지혜로운 이는 버리고 나아간다.

Appamatto pamattesu suttesu bahujāgaro 

Abalassaṃva sīghasso hitvā yāti sumedhaso.

Heedful among the heedless, 

wide-awake among the sleepy, 

the wise man advances 

like a swift horse leaving behind a weak jade.

30. 성실함으로 제석천왕은 

신들의 으뜸이 되어,

그들은 성실함을 칭찬하며 

나태함을 항상 비난한다.

Appamādena maghavā devānaṃ seṭṭhataṃ gato 

Appamādaṃ pasaṃsanti pamādo garahito sadā.

By Heedfulness did Indra become 

the overlord of the gods. 

Heedfulness is ever praised, 

and heedlessness ever despised.

* 제석천왕은 전생에 32명의 친구들과 함께 사람들을 위해 길과 대피소를 만들어 주었다 한다. 이런 선한 실천으로 32명의 친구들과 도리천(삽십삼천)에 태어나 그곳의 가장 높은 신이 된다.

31. 성실함을 기뻐하는 비구는 

나태함에서 두려움을 보기에

미세하고 거친 속박을 

불처럼 태워간다.

Appamādarato bhikkhu pamāde bhayadassivā 

Saṃyojanaṃ aṇuṃ thūlaṃ ḍahaṃ aggīva gacchati.

The monk who delights in heedfulness 

and looks with fear at heedlessness 

advances like fire, 

burning all fetters, small and large.

* 비구는 출가한 남자 수행자를 가리키는 말이다.

32. 성실함을 기뻐하는 비구는 

나태함에서 두려움을 보기에

퇴보가 불가능하고 

오직 열반 가까이로 다가간다.

Appamādarato bhikkhu pamāde bhayadassivā 

Abhabbo parihānāya nibbānass’ eva santike.

The monk who delights in heedfulness 

and looks with fear at heedlessness will not fall. 

He is close to Nibbana.
