33. 동요하고 불안정하여
보호하기 어렵고 다스리기 힘든 마음을
현명한 이는 바르게 한다,
화살 만드는 이가 화살촉을 곧게 하듯.
Phandanaṃ capalaṃ cittaṃ dūrakkhaṃ dunnivārayaṃ
Ujuṃ karoti medhāvī usukāro va tejanaṃ.
Just as a fletcher straightens an arrow shaft,
even so the discerning man straightens his mind—
so fickle and unsteady, so difficult to guard.
34. 여기 저기 물에서 살다 잡혀
땅에 던져진 물고기처럼
마음은 파닥거린다,
마라의 영역을 벗어나고자.
Vārijova thale khitto okamokataubbhato
Pariphandat’ idaṃ cittaṃ māradheyyaṃ pahātave.
As a fish when pulled out of water
and cast on land throbs and quivers,
even so is this mind agitated.
Hence should one abandon the realm of Mara.
35. 빠르게 흘러 제어하기 어렵고
욕망이 있는 곳에 떨어지는 마음.
그런 마음의 다스림은 훌륭하고
길들인 마음은 행복을 가져온다.
Dunniggahassa lahuno yatthakāmanipātino
Cittassa damatho sādhu cittaṃ dantaṃ sukhāvahaṃ.
Wonderful, indeed, it is to subdue the mind,
so difficult to subdue, ever swift,
and seizing whatever it desires.
A tamed mind brings happiness.
36. 아주 미묘하여 매우 보기 어렵고
욕망이 있는 곳에 떨어지는 마음.
그런 마음을 현명한 이는 보호해야 하고
잘 지킨 마음은 행복을 가져온다.
Sududdasaṃ sunipuṇaṃ yatthakāmanipātinaṃ
Cittaṃ rakkhetha medhāvī cittaṃ guttaṃ sukhāvahaṃ.
Let the discerning man guard the mind,
so difficult to detect and extremely subtle,
seizing whatever it desires.
A guarded mind brings happiness.
37. 홀로 멀리 다니며
몸 없이 심장의 동굴에 의지한 마음.
그런 마음을 잘 다스리는 이들은
마라의 속박에서 벗어난다.
Dūraṅgamaṃ ekacaraṃ asarīraṃ guhāsayaṃ
Ye cittaṃ saṃyamessanti mokkhanti mārabandhanā.
Dwelling in the cave (of the heart), the mind,
without form, wanders far and alone.
Those who subdue this mind are
liberated from the bonds of Mara.

38. 마음이 불안정하고
참된 가르침을 알지 못하여
믿음이 흔들리는 자에게
지혜는 완성되지 않는다.
Anavaṭṭhitacittassa saddhammaṃ avijānato
Pariplavapasādassa paññā na paripūrati.
Wisdom never becomes perfect in one
whose mind is not steadfast,
who knows not the Good Teaching
and whose faith wavers.
39. 마음에 욕망이 차있지 않고
생각이 혼란스럽지 않은,
선과 악을 버린 깨어있는 사람에게
두려움은 없다.
Anavassutacittassa ananvāhatacetaso
Puññapāpapahīnassa n’ atthi jāgarato bhayaṃ.
There is no fear for an awakened one,
whose mind is not sodden (by lust) nor afflicted (by hate),
and who has gone beyond both merit and demerit.
40. 깨지기 쉬운 항아리처럼 이 몸을 알고
굳건한 성처럼 마음을 세워
지혜를 무기로 ‘마라’와 맞서 싸워
승리를 지켜 집착없이 머물러라.
Kumbhūpamaṃ kāyamimaṃ viditvā nagarūpamaṃ cittamidaṃ ṭhapetvā
Yodhetha māraṃ paññāvudhena jitañca rakkhe anivesano siyā.
Realizing that this body is as fragile as a clay pot,
and fortifying this mind like a well-fortified city,
fight out Mara with the sword of wisdom.
Then, guarding the conquest, remain unattached.
41. 머지않아 진정 이 몸은
땅에 누울 것이다,
쓸모없는 널빤지처럼
버려져 의식이 없는 체로.
Aciraṃ vatayaṃ kāyo pathaviṃ adhisessati
Chuddho apetaviññāṇo niratthaṃva kaliṅgaraṃ.
Ere long, alas!
This body will lie upon the earth,
unheeded and lifeless,
like a useless log.
42. 적이 적에게, 원수가 원수에게
무슨 짓이든 할 수 있지만
잘못 쓴 마음은
그보다 더한 나쁜 짓을 할 수 있다.
Diso disaṃ yaṃ taṃ kayirā verī vā pana verinaṃ
Micchāpaṇihitaṃ cittaṃ pāpiyo naṃ tato kare.
Whatever harm an enemy may do to
an enemy, or a hater to a hater,
an ill-directed mind inflicts on oneself a greater harm.
43. 어머니와 아버지
혈육조차 할 수 없는 일이 있지만
바르게 쓴 마음은
그보다 더 좋은 일을 할 수 있다.
Na taṃ mātā pitā kayirā aññe vāpi ca ñātakā
Sammāpaṇihitaṃ cittaṃ seyyaso naṃ tato kare.
Neither mother, father,
nor any other relative
can do one greater good
than one’s own well-directed mind.
