22. 지옥의 장

306. 거짓말을 하는 자와 해놓고 

내가 안 했다 말하는 자는 지옥에 간다.

이 둘은 죽어 저 세상에서 똑같이 

비천한 업의 존재가 될 것이다.  

Abhūtavādī nirayaṃ upeti yo vā pi katvā na karomi c’ āha 

Ubho pi te pecca samā bhavanti nihīnakammā manujā parattha.

The liar goes to the state of woe; 

also he who, having done (wrong), says, “I did not do it.” 

Men of base actions both, 

on departing they share the same destiny in the other world.

307. 가사를 목에 두르고도 

많은 자들은 악한 마음으로 절제가 없다. 

그런 악한 자들은

악업으로 다시 지옥에 태어난다.

Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo pāpadhammā asaññatā 

Pāpā pāpehi kammehi nirayaṃ te upapajjare.

There are many evil characters 

and uncontrolled men wearing the saffron robe. 

These wicked men will be born 

in states of woe because of their evil deeds.

308. 계행이 나쁜 자는 절제 없이 

나라의 음식을 먹는 것보다

불꽃에 달구어진 

쇠 구슬을 먹는 편이 더 낫다. 

Seyyo ayoguḷo bhutto tatto aggisikhūpamo.

Yañce bhuñjeyya dussīlo raṭṭhapiṇḍamasaññato.

It would be better to swallow 

a red-hot iron ball, blazing like fire, 

than as an immoral and uncontrolled monk 

to eat the alms of the people.

309. 남의 아내를 쫓는 방탕한 자는 

네 가지 결과를 만난다. 

악덕을 쌓고 잠자리가 편치 않으며 

세번째는 비난과 네번째는 지옥이다. 

Cattāri ṭhānāni naro pamatto āpajjati paradārūpasevī 

Apuññalābhaṃ na nikāmaseyyaṃ nindaṃ tatīyaṃ nirayaṃ catutthaṃ.

Four misfortunes befall the reckless man 

who consorts with another’s wife: 

acquisition of demerit, disturbed sleep, 

ill-repute, and (rebirth in) states of woe.

310. 악덕을 쌓아 악처에 태어날 

두려운 남녀의 쾌락은 순간이다.

또한 왕이 중한 벌을 내리므로 

남자는 남의 아내를 탐해서는 안된다. 

Apuññalābho ca gatī ca pāpikā bhītassa bhītāya ratī ca thokikā 

Rājā ca daṇḍaṃ garukaṃ paṇeti tasmā naro paradāraṃ na seve.

Such a man acquires demerit and an unhappy birth in the future. 

Brief is the pleasure of the frightened man and woman, 

and the king imposes heavy punishment. 

Hence, let no man consort with another’s wife.

311. 잘못 잡은 길상초가

손만 베듯이

잘못 취한 출가의 삶은 

지옥으로 끌려 간다.

Kuso yathā duggahito hattham evānukantati 

Sāmaññaṃ dupparāmaṭṭhaṃ nirayāyupakaḍḍhati.

Just as kusa grass wrongly handled cuts the hand, 

even so, a recluse’s life wrongly lived 

drags one to states of woe.

312. 어떤 것이든 느슨한 행동,

더러운 서원의 실천,

의심스런 고귀한 삶,

이것은 큰 결실이 되지 못한다.

Yaṃ kiñci sithilaṃ kammaṃ saṃkiliṭṭhañca yaṃ vataṃ 

Saṅkassaraṃ brahmacariyaṃ na taṃ hoti mahapphalaṃ.

Any loose act, any corrupt observance, 

any life of questionable celibacy—

none of these bear much fruit.

313. 만약 해야 한다면 

실천하며 확고히 노력해야 한다.  

느슨한 출가의 삶은

더욱 먼지만 흩날린다. 

Kayirā ce kayirāth’ enaṃ daḷham enaṃ parakkame 

Sithilo hi paribbājo bhiyyo ākirate rajaṃ.

If anything is to be done, 

let one do it with sustained vigor. 

A lax monastic life stirs up 

the dust of passions all the more.

314. 훗날 괴롭기에 

나쁜 짓은 하지 않는 것이 낫다.

해서 후회 하지 않으므로 

착한 일을 하는 것이 낫다.

Akataṃ dukkaṭaṃ seyyo pacchā tappati dukkaṭaṃ 

Katañca sukataṃ seyyo yaṃ katvā nānutappati.

An evil deed is better left undone,

 for such a deed torments one afterwards. 

But a good deed is better done, 

doing which one repents not later.

315. 안과 밖으로

잘 지켜지는 국경의 마을.

이와 같이 너희들은 자신을 지켜 

진정 한 순간도 헛되이 보내지 말라. 

순간을 헛되이 보낸 자들은 

끌려간 지옥에서 진정 슬퍼하리.  

Nagaraṃ yathā paccantaṃ guttaṃ santarabāhiraṃ 

Evaṃ gopetha attānaṃ khaṇo ve mā upaccagā 

Khaṇātītā hi socanti nirayamhi samappitā.

Just as a border city is closely guarded 

both within and without, even so, guard yourself. 

Do not let slip this opportunity (for spiritual growth). 

For those who let slip this opportunity 

grieve indeed when consigned to hell.

316. 부끄럽지 않을 일에 부끄럽고 

부끄러운 일에 부끄럽지 않은

잘못된 견해를 가진 존재들은 

나쁜 곳으로 가서 태어난다. 

Alajjitāye lajjanti lajjitāye na lajjare 

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā sattā gacchanti duggatiṃ.

Those who are ashamed of what they should not be ashamed of, 

and are not ashamed of what they should be ashamed of—

upholding false views, they go to states of woe.

317. 두렵지 않은 것을 두렵다 보고 

두려운 것을 두렵지 않다 보는   

잘못된 견해를 가진 존재들은 

나쁜 곳으로 가서 태어난다. 

Abhaye bhayadassino bhaye cābhayadassino 

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā sattā gacchanti duggatiṃ.

Those who see something to fear where there is nothing to fear, 

and see nothing to fear where there is something to fear—

upholding false views, they go to states of woe.

318. 잘못 아닌 것을 잘못이라 여기고 

잘못을 잘못이 아니라 여기는

삿된 견해를 가진 존재들은 

나쁜 곳으로 가서 태어난다.  

Avajje vajjamatino vajje cāvajjadassino 

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā sattā gacchanti duggatiṃ.

Those who imagine evil where there is none, 

and do not see evil where it is—

upholding false views, 

they go to states of woe.

319. 잘못을 잘못으로 알고 

잘못 아님을 잘못이 아니다 아는

바른 견해를 가진 존재들은 

좋은 곳으로 가서 태어난다. 

Vajjañca vajjato ñatvā avajjañca avajjato 

Sammādiṭṭhisamādānā sattā gacchanti suggatiṃ.

Those who discern the wrong 

as wrong and the right as right—

upholding right views, 

they go to realms of bliss.
