23. 코끼리의 장

320. 전쟁의 코끼리가 

활이 쏜 화살을 견디듯

나는 비난을 견딜 것이다, 

많은 사람들은 진정 행실이 나쁘기에.  

Ahaṃ nāgova saṅgāme cāpato patitaṃ saraṃ 

Ativākyaṃ titikkhissaṃ dussīlo hi bahujjano.

As an elephant in the battlefield withstands arrows 

shot from bows all around, 

even so shall I endure abuse. 

There are many, indeed, who lack virtue.

321. 대중들이 모인 곳에 데려간 

길들여진 코끼리에 왕이 오르듯

자신을 길들여 비난을 견디는 이가 

인간들 가운데 최상이다.  

Dantaṃ nayanti samitiṃ dantaṃ rājābhirūhati 

Danto seṭṭho manussesu yotivākyaṃ titikkhati.

A tamed elephant is led into a crowd, 

and the king mounts a tamed elephant. 

Best among men is the subdued one 

who endures abuse.

322. 길들여진 노새와

혈통 좋은 명마 그리고 

큰 상아 코끼리가 훌륭하지만 

자신을 길들임이 더 훌륭하다. 

Varam assatarā dantā  ājānīyā ca sindhavā 

Kuñjarā ca mahānāgā attadanto tato varaṃ.

Excellent are well-trained mules, 

thoroughbred Sindhu horses and noble tusker elephants. 

But better still is the man who has subdued himself.

323. 이런 탈 것들로는 

가지 못한 곳에 이르지 못하지만

자신을 잘 길들인 이처럼 

길들이고 길들여 그곳에 간다. 

Na hi etehi yānehi gaccheyya agataṃ disaṃ 

Yathāttanā sudantena danto dantena gacchati.

Not by these mounts, however, 

would one go to the Untrodden Land (Nibbana), 

as one who is self-tamed 

goes by his own tamed and well-controlled mind.

324. ‘재산의 수호자’라는 이름의 코끼리는 

발정기에 제어하기 어렵다. 

그 코끼리는 묶이면 한입도 먹지 않고 

코끼리의 숲을 생각한다. 

Dhanapālako nāma kuñjaro kaṭukappabhedano dunnivārayo 

Baddho kabaḷaṃ na bhuñjati sumarati nāgavanassa kuñjaro.

Musty during rut, the tusker named Dhanapalaka 

is uncontrollable. Held in captivity, 

the tusker does not touch a morsel, 

but only longingly calls to mind the elephant forest.

325. 여물을 먹인 큰 돼지처럼 

많이 먹고 졸리면

뒹굴어 누워 자는

우매한 자는 거듭 모태에 든다.

Middhī yadā hoti mahagghaso ca niddāyitā samparivattasāyī 

Mahāvarāhova nivāpapuṭṭho punappunaṃ gabbham upeti mando.

When a man is sluggish and gluttonous, 

sleeping and rolling around in bed like a fat domestic pig, 

that sluggard undergoes rebirth again and again.

326. 과거 이 마음은 제멋대로 욕망이 있는 곳에

즐거움을 따라서 떠돌았으나 

조련사가 발정난 코끼리를 다루듯

지금 나는 이 마음을 철저히 제어할 것이다.  

Idaṃ pure cittamacāri cārikaṃ yenicchakaṃ yatthakāmaṃ yathāsukhaṃ 

Tadajjahaṃ niggahessāmi yoniso hatthippabhinnaṃ viya aṅkusaggaho.

Formerly this mind wandered about as it liked, 

where it wished and according to its pleasure, 

but now I shall thoroughly master it with wisdom 

as a mahout controls with his ankus an elephant in rut.

327. 그대들은 나태하지 않음을 기뻐하며 

자신의 마음을 보호하라!

진흙에 빠진 코끼리처럼

힘든 길에서 자신을 일으켜라. 

Appamādaratā hotha sacittamanurakkhatha 

Duggā uddharathattānaṃ paṅke sanno va kuñjaro.

Delight in heedfulness! 

Guard well your thoughts! 

Draw yourself out of this bog of evil, 

even as an elephant draws himself out of the mud.

328. 만약 훌륭히 살아가는 현명한 이를 

함께 할 지혜로운 동반자로 얻는다면 

그와 함께 모든 어려움을 극복하고 

기쁜 마음으로 깨어 바라보며 살아가라. 

Sace labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāridhīraṃ 

Abhibhuyya sabbāni parissayāni careyya tenattamano satīmā.

If for company you find 

a wise and prudent friend who leads a good life, 

you should, overcoming all impediments, 

keep his company joyously and mindfully.

329. 만약 훌륭히 살아가는 현명한 이를 

함께 할 지혜로운 동반자로 얻지 못하면 

왕이 정복한 나라를 뒤로하듯, 

코끼리 숲의 코끼리처럼 혼자서 가라. 

No ce labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāridhīraṃ 

Rājā va raṭṭhaṃ vijitaṃ pahāya eko care mātaṅgaraññe va nāgo.

If for company you cannot find 

a wise and prudent friend who leads a good life,

 then, like a king who leaves behind a conquered kingdom, 

or like a lone elephant in the elephant forest, 

you should go your way alone.

330. 홀로 사는 것이 더 좋고 

어리석은 자와의 우정은 없다.

코끼리 숲의 코끼리처럼 적은 욕심으로 

홀로 살며 나쁜 짓을 하지 않는다.

Ekassa caritaṃ seyyo natthi bāle sahāyatā 

Eko care na ca pāpāni kayirā appossukko mātaṅgaraññe va nāgo.

Better it is to live alone; 

there is no fellowship with a fool. 

Live alone and do no evil; 

be carefree like an elephant in the elephant forest.

331. 일이 생겼을 때 친구들이 행복이고 

무엇이든 만족이 행복이다.

수명이 다할 때 공덕이 행복이고 

모든 고통을 버림이 행복이다. 

Atthamhi jātamhi sukhā sahāyā tuṭṭhī sukhā yā itarītarena 

Puññaṃ sukhaṃ jīvitasaṅkhayamhi sabbassa dukkhassa sukhaṃ pahānaṃ.

Good are friends when need arises; 

good is contentment with just what one has; 

good is merit when life is at an end, 

and good is the abandoning of all suffering.

332. 어머니에 대한 효심이 세상에서 행복이고

또한 아버지에 대한 효심이 행복이다.

수행자에 대한 존경이 세상에서 행복이고

또한 성스러운 이에 대한 존경이 행복이다. 

Sukhā matteyyatā loke atho petteyyatā sukhā 

Sukhā sāmaññatā loke atho brahmaññatā sukhā.

In this world, good it is to serve one’s mother, 

good it is to serve one’s father, 

good it is to serve the monks, 

and good it is to serve the holy men.

333. 늙어감에 계행이 행복이고 

확고한 믿음이 행복이다.

지혜의 성취가 행복이고 

나쁜 짓을 하지 않음이 행복이다. 

Sukhaṃ yāva jarā sīlaṃ sukhā saddhā patiṭṭhitā 

Sukho paññāya paṭilābho pāpānaṃ akaraṇaṃ sukhaṃ.

Good is virtue until life’s end, 

good is faith that is steadfast, 

good is the acquisition of wisdom, 

and good is the avoidance of evil.
