129. 모두 다 폭력이 무섭고 

모두 다 죽음이 두렵다.

무섭고 두려운 ‘나’를 예로 삼아 

죽이지 말고 죽게도 하지 말라. 

Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa sabbe bhāyanti maccuno 

Attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā na haneyya na ghātaye.

All tremble at violence; all fear death. 

Putting oneself in the place of another, 

one should not kill nor cause another to kill.

130. 모두 다 폭력이 무섭고 

모두에게 삶은 소중하다.  

무섭고 소중한 ‘나’를 예로 삼아 

죽이지 말고 죽게도 하지 말라. 

Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa sabbesaṃ jīvitaṃ piyaṃ 

Attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā na haneyya na ghātaye.

All tremble at violence; life is dear to all. 

Putting oneself in the place of another, 

one should not kill nor cause another to kill.

131. 행복을 바라는 존재들을 

폭력으로 해치며

자신의 행복을 구하는 자가 있으나 

죽어서도 그는 행복을 얻지 못한다.

 Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni yo daṇḍena vihiṃsati 

Attano sukhamesāno pecca so na labhate sukhaṃ.

One who, while himself seeking happiness, 

oppresses with violence other beings 

who also desire happiness, 

will not attain happiness hereafter.

132. 행복을 바라는 존재들을 

폭력으로 해치지 않고

자신의 행복을 구하는 자가 있으니 

죽어서도 그는 행복을 얻는다. 

Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni yo daṇḍena na hiṃsati 

Attano sukhamesāno pecca so labhate sukhaṃ.

One who, while himself seeking happiness, 

does not oppress with violence other beings 

who also desire happiness, 

will find happiness hereafter.

133. 어떤 폭언도 하지 말라! 

뱉은 말들이 너에게 돌아올 것이다. 

분노의 말은 고통이다,

보복이 그것을 따르기에.  

Māvoca pharusaṃ kañci vuttā paṭivadeyyu taṃ

Dukkhā hi sārambhakathā paṭidaṇḍā phuseyyu taṃ.

Speak not harshly to anyone, 

for those thus spoken to might retort. 

Indeed, angry speech hurts, 

and retaliation may overtake you.

134. 만약 너 스스로 부서진 종처럼 

동요하지 않는다면

너에게 분노가 없으므로 

이것이 열반을 성취한 것이다. 

Sace neresi attānaṃ kaṃso upahato yathā 

Esa pattosi nibbānaṃ sārambho te na vijjati.

If, like a broken gong, you silence yourself, 

you have approached Nibbana, 

for vindictiveness is no longer in you.

135. 목동이 막대기로 

소 떼를 초원으로 몰고 가듯

이와 같이 늙음과 죽음은 

생명의 목숨을 몰고 간다. 

Yathā daṇḍena gopālo gāvo pājeti gocaraṃ 

Evaṃ jarā ca maccu ca āyuṃ pājenti pāṇinaṃ.

Just as a cowherd 

drives the cattle to pasture with a staff, 

so do old age and death 

drive the life force of beings (from existence to existence).

136. 나쁜 업을 지음에도 

어리석은 자는 그것을 알지 못하여

아둔한 자는 불에 타듯이 

스스로의 업으로 고통받는다.  

Atha pāpāni kammāni karaṃ bālo na bujjhati 

Sehi kammehi dummedho aggidaḍḍho va tappati.

When the fool commits evil deeds, 

he does not realize (their evil nature). 

The witless man is tormented by his own deeds, 

like one burnt by fire.

137. 비폭력의 무구한 이들에게 

폭력으로 잘못을 저지르는 자는

열 가지 가운데

하나의 과보를 빠르게 받는다. 

Yo daṇḍena adaṇḍesu appaduṭṭhesu dussati 

Dasannamaññataraṃ ṭhānaṃ khippameva nigacchati.

He who inflicts violence on those who are unarmed, 

and offends those who are inoffensive, 

will soon come upon one of these ten states:

138. 그는 심한 통증, 

강도, 신체의 손상, 

위중한 병, 

정신착란을 얻는다.

Vedanaṃ pharusaṃ jāniṃ sarīrassa ca bhedanaṃ 

Garukaṃ vāpi ābādhaṃ cittakkhepaṃ va pāpuṇe.

Sharp pain, or disaster, bodily injury, 

serious illness, or derangement of mind,

139. 또는 왕으로부터 처벌과 

극심한 비방

혈육의 죽음과 

재산의 상실을 당한다.

Rājato vā upassaggaṃ abbhakkhānaṃ va dāruṇaṃ 

Parikkhayaṃ va ñātīnaṃ bhogānaṃ va pabhaṅgunaṃ.

trouble from the government, or grave charges, 

loss of relatives, or loss of wealth,

140. 또는 큰 화재로 

그의 집들이 불타고 

몸이 쪼개져 어리석은 자로 

지옥에 태어난다.  

Athav’ assa agārāni aggi ḍahati pāvako 

Kāyassa bhedā duppañño nirayaṃ sopapajjati.

or houses destroyed by ravaging fire; 

upon dissolution of the body 

that ignorant man is born in hell.

141. 나체로 다니고, 머리를 길게 땋고

몸에 진흙을 묻히고, 단식을 하며, 땅바닥에 눕고

먼지와 오물을 묻히고, 쪼그려 앉는 노력 등

이는 의심을 극복하지 못하고 죽는 자를 정화하지 못한다. 

Na naggacariyā na jaṭā na paṅkā nānāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā vā 

Rajojallaṃ ukkuṭikappadhānaṃ sodhenti maccaṃ avitiṇṇakaṅkhaṃ.

Neither going about naked, nor matted locks, 

nor filth, nor fasting, nor lying on the ground,

 nor smearing oneself with ashes and dust, 

nor sitting on the heels (in penance) 

can purify a mortal who has not overcome doubt.

142. 누군가는 옷만 잘 차려입고 다니지만 

고요히 절제하며 다스려 성스럽게 살아가고

모든 존재들에게 폭력을 내려놓는 

그가 브라만이고, 그가 수행자이며, 그가 비구이다.  

Alaṅkato cepi samaṃ careyya santo danto niyato brahmacārī 

Sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṃ so brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu.

Even though he be well-attired, 

yet if he is poised, calm, controlled

 and established in the holy life, 

having set aside violence towards all beings—

he, truly, is a holy man, a renunciate, a monk.

* 브라만은 인도 카스트 제도의 가장 높은 계급으로 종교를 담당하는 사람들이다. 하지만 고귀한 사람이란 출생을 통한 계급이 아니라 수행과 실천을 통한 마음의 청정함으로 정해진다 부처님은 말씀 하신다.

143. 세상에 어떤 이가 있어서

부끄러움으로 절제하여

채찍으로 길들인 훌륭한 말처럼 

비난을 피할까?

Hirīnisedho puriso koci lokasmi vijjati 

Yo nindaṃ apabodhati asso bhadro kasām iva.

Only rarely is there a man in this world who, 

restrained by modesty, avoids reproach, 

as a thoroughbred horse avoids the whip.

144. 채찍으로 길들인 훌륭한 말처럼 

열심히 절박하게 정진하라.   

믿음과 계행, 노력과 집중 

그리고 법의 판별을 통해서 

밝은 앎과 실천을 갖추고 깊이 성찰하면 

많은 고통을 버릴 것이다.

Asso yathā bhadro kasāniviṭṭho ātāpino saṃvegino bhavātha  

Saddhāya sīlena ca vīriyena ca samādhinā dhammavinicchayena ca 

Sampannavijjācaraṇā patissatā pahassatha dukkhamidaṃ anappakaṃ.

Like a thoroughbred horse touched by the whip, 

be strenuous, be filled with spiritual yearning. 

By faith and moral purity, by effort and meditation, 

by investigation of the truth, 

by being rich in knowledge and virtue, 

and by being mindful, destroy this unlimited suffering.

145. 치수하는 이들은 물을 잘 이끌고

화살 만드는 이들은 화살촉을 바르게 펴며

목수들은 나무를 잘 구부리듯

바른 실천을 서원한 이들은 자신을 잘 다스린다. 

Udakañhi nayanti nettikā usukārā namayanti tejanaṃ 

Dāruṃ namayanti tacchakā attānaṃ damayanti subbatā.

Irrigators regulate the waters, 

fletchers straighten arrow shafts, 

carpenters shape wood, 

and the good control themselves.
