116. 서둘러 선을 실천하고 

악행에서 마음을 억제하라.

공덕을 짓는 일에 느긋한 마음은 

악행을 즐거워한다.

Abhittharetha kalyāṇe pāpā cittaṃ nivāraye 

Dandhañ hi karoto puññaṃ pāpasmiṃ ramatī mano.

Hasten to do good; 

restrain your mind from evil. 

He who is slow in doing good, 

his mind delights in evil.

117. 사람이 나쁜 짓을 했다면 

그것을 반복하지 말아야 한다.

악행에 의욕을 일으키지 말라,

고통은 악행의 누적이므로.

Pāpañ ce puriso kayirā na naṃ kayirā punappunaṃ 

Na tamhi chandaṃ kayirātha dukkho pāpassa uccayo.

Should a person commit evil, 

let him not do it again and again. 

Let him not find pleasure therein, 

for painful is the accumulation of evil.

118. 사람이 착한 일을 했다면 

그것을 거듭 실천해야 한다.  

선행에 의욕을 일으켜라,

행복은 공덕의 축적이므로.

Puññañ ce puriso kayirā kayirāth’ etaṃ punappunaṃ 

Tamhi chandaṃ kayirātha sukho puññassa uccayo.

Should a person do good, 

let him do it again and again. 

Let him find pleasure therein, 

for blissful is the accumulation of good.

119. 악업이 익지 않은 동안에 

악한 자도 좋은 일을 만난다.

악업이 익는 그때 

악한 자는 나쁜 일을 만난다.

  

Pāpopi passati bhadraṃ yāva pāpaṃ na paccati 

Yadā ca paccati pāpaṃ atha pāpo pāpāni passati.

It may be well with the evil-doer 

as long as the evil ripens not. 

But when it does ripen, 

then the evil-doer sees the painful results.

120. 선업이 익지 않은 동안에 

선한 사람도 괴로움을 만난다.

선업이 익는 그때

선한 사람은 좋은 일을 만난다.

Bhadropi passati pāpaṃ yāva bhadraṃ na paccati 

Yadā ca paccati bhadraṃ atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.

It may be ill with the doer of good 

as long as the good ripens not.

 But when it does ripen, 

then the doer of good sees the pleasant results.

121. 악업을 가볍게 여기지 말라 

그것이 내게 오지 않을 거란 생각으로. 

물방울이 떨어져 

항아리가 차듯

어리석은 자는 조금씩 조금씩 

악업을 채운다.

Māppamaññetha pāpassa na man taṃ āgamissati 

Udabindunipātena udakumbho pi pūrati 

Bālo pūrati pāpassa thokathokam pi ācinaṃ.

Think not lightly of evil, saying, 

“It will not come to me.” 

Drop by drop is the water pot filled. 

Likewise, the fool, 

gathering it little by little, fills himself with evil.

122. 공덕을 가볍게 여기지 말라

그것이 내게 오지 않을 거라는 생각으로. 

물방울이 떨어져 

항아리가 차듯

현명한 이는 조금씩 조금씩 

공덕을 채운다.

 

Māppamaññetha puññassa na man taṃ āgamissati 

Udabindunipātena udakumbhopi pūrati 

Dhīro pūrati puññassa thokaṃ thokampi ācinaṃ.

Think not lightly of good, saying, 

“It will not come to me.” 

Drop by drop is the water pot filled. 

Likewise, the wise man, 

gathering it little by little, fills himself with good.

123. 부유한 상인이 작은 마차로 

무서운 길을 피해 다니듯

또는 살고자 하는 이가 독을 피하듯 

여러 악행을 피해야 한다.

  

Vāṇijova bhayaṃ maggaṃ appasattho mahaddhano 

Visaṃ jīvitukāmova pāpāni parivajjaye

Just as a trader with a small escort 

and great wealth would avoid a perilous route, 

or just as one desiring to live avoids poison, 

even so should one shun evil.

124. 손에 상처가 없으면 

독을 손으로 잡아 제거할 수 있다.

상처가 없는 곳에 독이 퍼지지 않듯

지음이 없는 이에게 악업이란 없다.

 

Pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa hareyya pāṇinā visaṃ 

Nābbaṇaṃ visam anveti natthi pāpaṃ akubbato.

If on the hand there is no wound, 

one may carry even poison in it. 

Poison does not affect one 

who is free from wounds. 

For him who does no evil, there is no ill.

125. 믿음을 가진 더러움이 없고 

티가 없는 사람에게 잘못을 저지르면

그 악업이 그 어리석은 자에게 진정 되돌아 온다,

역풍에 던져진 작은 먼지들처럼. 

Yo appaduṭṭhassa narassa dussati suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa 

Tam eva bālaṃ pacceti pāpaṃ sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṃ va khitto.

Like fine dust thrown against the wind, 

evil falls back upon that fool 

who offends an inoffensive, 

pure and guiltless man.

126. 어떤 이들은 모태에서 태어나고 

악업을 지은 자들은 지옥에서 태어난다.

바르게 산 이들은 천상에 가고 

번뇌를 여읜 이들은 완전한 열반에 든다.

Gabbhameke uppajjanti nirayaṃ pāpakammino 

Saggaṃ sugatino yanti parinibbanti anāsavā.

Some are born in the womb; 

the wicked are born in hell; 

the devout go to heaven; 

the stainless pass into Nibbana.

127. 허공에도 없고 바다 한가운데도 없으며 

산의 동굴에 들어가도 없다.  

세상 어느 곳에 서 있어도 

악업에서 자유로운 곳은 없다.

 

Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe na pabbatānaṃ vivaraṃ pavissa 

Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā.

Neither in the sky nor in mid-ocean, 

nor by entering into mountain clefts, 

nowhere in the world is there a place 

where one may escape from the results of evil deeds.

128. 허공에도 없고 바다 한가운데도 없으며 

산의 동굴에 들어가도 없다.  

세상 어느 곳에 서 있어도 

죽음이 정복하지 않는 곳은 없다.

Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe na pabbatānaṃ vivaraṃ pavissa 

Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso yatthaṭṭhitaṃ nappasaheyya maccu.

Neither in the sky nor in mid-ocean, 

nor by entering into mountain clefts, 

nowhere in the world is there a place 

where one will not be overcome by death.
