100. 의미 없는 

천 마디 말보다 

듣고 마음이 고요해지는 

의미 있는 한마디 말이 더 좋다.

Sahassamapi ce vācā anatthapadasaṃhitā 

Ekaṃ atthapadaṃ seyyo yaṃ sutvā upasammati.

Better than a thousand useless words 

is one useful word, hearing which one attains peace.

101. 의미 없는 말의 

천 편의 시보다

듣고 마음이 고요해지는 

한 편의 시가 더 좋다.

Sahassamapi ce gāthā anatthapadasaṃhitā 

Ekaṃ gāthāpadaṃ seyyo yaṃ sutvā upasammati.

Better than a thousand useless verses is one useful verse, 

hearing which one attains peace.

102. 의미 없는 말의 

백 편의 시를 읊는 것보다

듣고 마음이 고요해지는 

한마디의 가르침이 더 좋다. 

Yo ca gāthāsataṃ bhāse anatthapadasaṃhitā 

Ekaṃ dhammapadaṃ seyyo yaṃ sutvā upasammati.

Better than reciting a hundred meaningless verses 

is the reciting of one verse of Dhamma, 

hearing which one attains peace.

103. 천에 천을 곱한 수만큼의 사람을 

전쟁에서 이기는 것보다

하나뿐인 자신을 이겨 싸움에서 승리한 

그가 진정 최고다.

Yo sahassaṃ sahassena saṅgāme mānuse jine 

Ekañ ca jeyyam attānaṃ sa ve saṅgāmajuttamo.

Though one may conquer 

a thousand times a thousand men in battle, 

yet he indeed is the noblest victor 

who conquers himself.

104. 다른 이들을 이기는 것보다 

진정 자신을 이기는 것이 더 좋다. 

자신을 길들인 사람은 

끊임없이 스스로를 절제하며 살아간다. 

Attā have jitaṃ seyyo yā cāyaṃ itarā pajā 

Attadantassa posassa niccaṃ saññatacārino.

Though one may conquer 

a thousand times a thousand men in battle, 

yet he indeed is the noblest victor 

who conquers himself.

105. 신과 건달바

마라와 범천왕은 결코

그런 인간의 승리를 

패배로 만들지 못한다.

N’eva devo na gandhabbo na māro saha brahmunā 

Jitaṃ apajitaṃ kayirā tathārūpassa jantuno.

Self-conquest is far better than the conquest of others. 

Not even a god, an angel, Mara or Brahma 

can turn into defeat the victory of a person 

who is self-subdued and ever restrained in conduct.

* 신. 건달바, 마라, 범천왕은 모두 하늘 세상의 존재들로, 이 가운데 마라는 부처님의 깨달음을 방해하는 악한 신으로 그려진다.

106. 달마다 천에 백을 곱한 수만큼 

희생제를 지내도

자신을 잘 닦은 한 사람을 

순간이라도 예경하는 일이

백 년 동안 희생제를 

하는 것보다 더 낫다.

Māse māse sahassena yo yajetha sataṃ samaṃ 

Ekañ ca bhāvitattānaṃ muhuttam api pūjaye 

Sā yeva pūjanā seyyo yañce vassasataṃ hutaṃ.

Though month after month for a hundred years 

one should offer sacrifices by the thousands, 

yet if only for a moment 

one should worship those of perfected minds 

that honor is indeed better than a century of sacrifice.

107. 사람이 숲에서 백 년 동안

불을 지켜 섬겨도

자신을 잘 닦은 한 사람을 

순간이라도 예경하는 일이 

백 년 동안 불을 섬기는 

희생제 보다 더 낫다.

Yo ca vassasataṃ jantu aggiṃ paricare vane 

Ekañca bhāvitattānaṃ muhuttamapi pūjaye 

Sāyeva pūjanā seyyo yañce vassasataṃ hutaṃ.

Though for a hundred years 

one should tend the sacrificial fire in the forest, 

yet if only for a moment 

one should worship those of perfected minds, 

that worship is indeed better than a century of sacrifice.

108. 복을 구하며 세상 어떤 제물과 

공양물을 바쳐 일년 동안 제사를 지내더라도

이 모든 것은 올바른 사람을 공경하는 

더 좋은 일에 사분의 일도 미치지 못한다.

Yaṃ kiñci yiṭṭhañ ca hutañ ca loke saṃvaccharaṃ yajetha puññapekkho 

Sabbampi taṃ na catubhāgam eti abhivādanā ujjugatesu seyyo.

Whatever gifts and oblations one seeking merit 

might offer in this world for a whole year, 

all that is not worth one fourth of the merit 

gained by revering the Upright Ones, which is truly excellent.

109. 항상 예경을 실천하고 

어른을 공경하는 이에게

수명, 용모, 행복, 건강

이 네 가지 것들이 늘어난다.

Abhivādanasīlissa niccaṃ vaddhāpacāyino 

Cattāro dhammā vaḍḍhanti āyu vaṇṇo sukhaṃ balaṃ.

To one ever eager to revere and serve the elders, 

these four blessing accrue: 

long life and beauty, happiness and power.

110. 계를 지키지 않고 

불안함으로 백 년을 사는 것보다 

계를 지키며 명상을 하는 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다.

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve dussīlo asamāhito 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo sīlavantassa jhāyino.

Better it is to live one day virtuous and meditative 

than to live a hundred years immoral and uncontrolled.

111. 어리석게 불안함으로 

백 년을 사는 것보다  

명상으로 지혜로운 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다. 

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve duppañño asamāhito 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo paññavantassa jhāyino.

Better it is to live one day wise and meditative 

than to live a hundred years foolish and uncontrolled.

112. 나태하고 저열한 노력으로 

백 년을 사는 것보다 

확고한 노력을 기울이는 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다.

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve kusīto hīnavīriyo 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo vīriyam ārabhato daḷhaṃ.

Better it is to live one day strenuous and resolute 

than to live a hundred years sluggish and dissipated.

113. 일어남과 사라짐을 보지 못하고 

백 년을 사는 것보다 

일어남과 사라짐을 보는 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다.

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve apassaṃ udayabbayaṃ 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo passato udayabbayaṃ.

Better it is to live one day seeing the rise and fall of things 

than to live a hundred years 

without ever seeing the rise and fall of things.

114. 죽지 않는 길을 보지 못하고 

백 년을 사는 것보다

죽지 않는 길을 보는 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다.

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve apassaṃ amataṃ padaṃ 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo passato amataṃ padaṃ.

Better it is to live one day seeing the Deathless 

than to live a hundred years 

without ever seeing the Deathless.

115. 최상의 법을 보지 못하고 

백 년을 사는 것보다

최상의 법을 보는 

단 하루의 삶이 더 좋다. 

Yo ca vassasataṃ jīve apassaṃ dhammamuttamaṃ 

Ekāhaṃ jīvitaṃ seyyo passato dhammamuttamaṃ.

Better it is to live one day seeing the Supreme Truth 

than to live a hundred years 

without ever seeing the Supreme Truth.
