76. 내 잘못을 지적하는 이를
숨겨진 보물을 알려주는 듯 보고
그것을 꾸짖어 말해주는
그런 지혜로운 이를 가까이 하라.
그런 현명한 이를 가까이 하여
더 좋은 일이 있지 더 나쁜 일은 없다.
Nidhīnaṃva pavattāraṃ yaṃ passe vajjadassinaṃ
Niggayhavādiṃ medhāviṃ tādisaṃ paṇḍitaṃ bhaje
Tādisaṃ bhajamānassa seyyo hoti na pāpiyo.
Should one find a man
who points out faults and who reproves,
let him follow such a wise and sagacious person
as one would a guide to hidden treasure.
It is always better, and never worse,
to cultivate such an association.
77. 충고하고 훈계하지만
무례함을 억제하여
그는 선한 이에게 소중하고
악한 자에게는 소중하지 않다.
Ovadeyyānusāseyya asabbhā ca nivāraye
Satañhi so piyo hoti asataṃ hoti appiyo.
Let him admonish,
instruct and shield one from wrong;
he, indeed, is dear to the good
and detestable to the evil.
78. 나쁜 친구들을 사귀지 말고
저열한 사람들도 사귀지 말라.
착한 친구들을 사귀어야 하며
훌륭한 사람들을 사귀어야 한다.
Na bhaje pāpake mitte na bhaje purisādhame
Bhajetha mitte kalyāṇe bhajetha purisuttame.
Do not associate with evil companions;
do not seek the fellowship of the vile.
Associate with the good friends;
seek the fellowship of noble men.
79. 법을 마시는 이는
맑은 생각으로 행복하게 잠을 잔다.
성인이 가르치신 법 가운데
지혜로운 이는 항상 기쁘다.
Dhammapīti sukhaṃ seti vippasannena cetasā
Ariyappavedite dhamme sadā ramati paṇḍito.
He who drinks deep the Dhamma
lives happily with a tranquil mind.
The wise man ever delights in the Dhamma
made known by the Noble One (the Buddha).
80. 치수하는 이들은 물을 잘 이끌고
화살 만드는 이들은 화살촉을 바르게 펴며
목수들은 나무를 잘 구부리듯
지혜로운 이들은 자신을 잘 길들인다.
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā usukārā namayanti tejanaṃ
Dāruṃ namayanti tacchakā attānaṃ damayanti paṇḍitā.
Irrigators regulate the rivers;
fletchers straighten the arrow shaft;
carpenters shape the wood;
the wise control themselves.
81. 큰 바위 하나가
바람에 흔들리지 않듯
이처럼 지혜로운 이들은
비난과 칭찬에 움직이지 않는다.
Selo yathā ekaghano vātena na samīrati
Evaṃ nindāpasaṃsāsu na samiñjanti paṇḍitā.
Just as a solid rock
is not shaken by the storm,
even so the wise are
not affected by praise or blame.
82. 또한 맑고 깊은
고요한 호수처럼
이와 같이 지혜로운 이들은
가르침을 듣고 마음이 깨끗해진다.
Yathāpi rahado gambhīro vippasanno anāvilo
Evaṃ dhammāni sutvāna vippasīdanti paṇḍitā.
On hearing the Teachings,
the wise become perfectly purified,
like a lake deep, clear and still.
83. 참되고 진실한 사람들은 모든 것을 내려놓고
욕망의 즐거움에 대하여 떠들지 않는다.
지혜로운 이들은 행복 또는 고통을 만나서
감정의 높낮이를 보이지 않는다.
Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo
Sukhena phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena na uccāvacaṃ paṇḍitā dassayanti.
The good renounce (attachment for) everything.
The virtuous do not prattle with a yearning for pleasures.
The wise show no elation or depression
when touched by happiness or sorrow.
84. 나를 위해서도 남을 위해서도
자식과 재산 그리고 권력을 위해서도
법이 아닌 것으로
자신의 성공을 구하지 않는 이.
그는 계행과 지혜를 갖춘
법다운 사람이다.
Na attahetu na parassa hetu na puttamicche na dhanaṃ na raṭṭhaṃ
Na iccheyya adhammena samiddhimattano
sa sīlavā paññavā dhammiko siyā.
He is indeed virtuous, wise, and righteous
who neither for his own sake
nor for the sake of another (does any wrong),
who does not crave for sons, wealth, or kingdom,
and does not desire success by unjust means.
85. 저 너머로 건너가는 이들은
인간 세상에 드물다.
그래서 여러 사람들은
단지 여기 이곳을 쫓아 다닌다.
Appakā te manussesu ye janā pāragāmino
Athāyaṃ itarā pajā tīramevānudhāvati.
Few among men are those
who cross to the farther shore.
The rest, the bulk of men,
only run up and down the hither bank.
* 저 너머, 즉 피안은 깨달음의 세상인 열반을 뜻한다.
86. 진정 바르게 전한 가르침 가운데
법을 실천하는 사람들.
그들은 매우 건너기 힘든
죽음의 영역 저 너머로 간다.
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte dhamme dhammānuvattino
Te janā pāramessanti maccudheyyaṃ suduttaraṃ.
But those who act
according to the perfectly taught Dhamma
will cross the realm of Death,
so difficult to cross.
87. 집을 떠나서 집 없이 홀로
즐거움을 얻기 힘든 곳으로 가서
지혜로운 이는 어두운 법을 버리고
밝은 법을 닦아야 한다.
Kaṇhaṃ dhammaṃ vippahāya sukkaṃ bhāvetha paṇḍito
Okā anokamāgamma viveke yattha dūramaṃ.
Abandoning the dark way,
let the wise man cultivate the bright path.
Having gone from home to homelessness,
let him yearn for that delight in detachment, so difficult to enjoy.
88. 그곳에서 감각적 욕망을 버리고
집착이 없는 기쁨을 구하여
지혜로운 이는 마음의 번뇌로부터
자신을 깨끗이 해야 한다.
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya hitvā kāme akiñcano
Pariyodapeyya attānaṃ cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
Giving up sensual pleasures,
with no attachment,
let the wise man cleanse himself
of defilements of the mind.
* 번뇌는 마음 가운데의 여러가지 더러움을 뜻하는 말이다. 대표적으로 10가지 번뇌를 열거하며, 탐욕, 미움, 어리석음, 자만, 나쁜 견해, 의심, 혼침, 들뜸, 부끄러움 없음, 양심없음 등이다.
89. 깨달음의 요건들로써
마음을 바르게 닦아
집착을 버려
집착 없이 즐거운 이들은,
번뇌를 소멸하여 빛나고
이 세상에서 완전한 열반을 얻는다.
Yesaṃ sambodhiyaṅgesu sammā cittaṃ subhāvitaṃ
Ādānapaṭinissagge anupādāya ye ratā
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto te loke parinibbutā.
Those whose minds have reached full excellence
in the factors of enlightenment,
who, having renounced acquisitiveness,
rejoice in not clinging to things—
rid of cankers, glowing with wisdom,
they have attained Nibbana in this very life.
